SUMMARY:-- CANCELLED -- CANCELLED -- CANCELLED -- Conquering Flash Photography
DESCRIPTION:—  CANCELLED  —  CANCELLED  —  CANCELLED  —  CANCELLED  —  CANCELLED \n  \nWhen: April 18\, 2020\, 10-4PM with an hour for lunch included.\nCost: $129.00\, $99 for BPS members.\nWhere: Berks Photographic Society at the GoggleWorks\, 201 Washington Street\, Suite 326\, Reading PA 19601\nLimit: 20 attendees. \nFlash photography can be intimidating. What seems to work one time\, produces disappointing results the next. Using flash beyond auto appears to be complicated and inconsistent. Your photos taken with flash always seem to have that harsh “flash look” to them. Sound familiar? \nPhil Magistro and Joel Styer want to change that. We want to help you feel confident with your flash photography. This class will largely deal with portraiture; however\, it is really about light and many of the techniques can be applied to any type of photography. \nFlash is used extensively in all realms of photography. While primarily associated with portraiture\, flash is extensively used in macro\, scientific\, architectural\, and many other types of photography. Trying to use flash without a basic understanding often leads to less than desirable photos. \nThe session will open with an overview of light\, its properties\, and how they relate to the mood of the image. Understanding light will not only improve your flash photography\, but non-flash photography as well. \nWhy to use flash is an important question and we’ll discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using flash over other types of light. We’ll help you understand the technical properties and limitations of flash and how to make them work for you. \nMixing flash with ambient light will be a key point of discussion and is the one area that generally leads to the most confusion. We’ll cover both TTL (auto) and manual flash and camera settings to get the most out of your equipment. \nThe ending portion of the class will include hands-on shooting where you get to practice the methods and have an opportunity to get firsthand help with any questions you may have. \nRequirements: Camera that have a hot shoe attachment (those that can use an external flash unit) such as a DSLR\, mirrorless or advanced point and shoot camera. If you don’t already have a flash\, we will have several available to use and will also cover aspects of purchasing a flash (hint\, expensive isn’t always the best). Please bring your camera and flash manuals with you to the class. Make sure to charge your batteries and have a clean memory card to use! \nIt’s time to get over flash-phobia and join us to conquer flash. Amaze your friends and family with consistently great looking photos. This introduction to Flash class will cover on-camera flash and ways to make it look great and set the stage for the next big step\, off camera flash. \n

SUMMARY:"Black & White Digital Photography" -- Les Picker -- MEMBERS ONLY -- LIVE ON ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:MEMBERS ONLY — LIVE ON ZOOM  SEE DETAILS IN NEWSLETTER \n  \nImmerse yourself in the world of black and white photography. What makes a great black and white photograph? In this presentation\, Les will take a look at some styles of the masters past and current\, and give you tips on looking at the world a little differently when you’re out with your camera. Les believes that black and white photography is the most difficult of all. Stripped of the distractions of color\, a black and white image must have drama\, emotion\, texture\, or wonderful tonality to be effective. He feels there is nothing equal to the visual and sensual pleasure of a classic black and white fine art print. Les’ presentation will be topped off with tips for aspiring B&W photographers. \nLes has photographed for National Geographic Society publications and many other consumer and corporate magazines and newspapers. He has had more than 600 published articles in major national publications. He was a monthly columnist and features contributor to Oceans Magazine and a weekly columnist\, Op-Ed contributor and features travel writer and photographer for The Baltimore Sun. Les shoots the Fujifilm medium format GFX systems.\nTwo characteristics shape Les’ photography: passion and inquisitiveness. Since an early age\, Les has been interested in the natural world and in other cultures. He has a doctorate in environmental affairs (winter ecology)\, which he believes helps inform his landscape and wildlife photography. His interest in other cultures draws him frequently to exotic locales.\nLes has cruised on a nuclear attack submarine deep in the Pacific Ocean and has climbed the highest peak in the Pyrenes. He has withstood -50F in the Arctic and tolerated 120F living with a Bedouin tribe in the Eastern desert of Egypt. He was nearly bitten by a sea lion in the Galapagos (never stand between a mother and her pup!) and was chased by a 16-foot alligator in South Africa (they are faster than you think!). \nLes was named Best Travel Photographer for the prestigious Canada Northern Lights Award. He is a keynote speaker\, lecturer and judge for photography competitions. Les also leads photography adventure tours throughout the world. \nLes is a Moab Fine Art Master Photographer and an X-Rite Coloratti. His print workshops are sponsored by Moab (a division of Legion Paper). \n“I feel blessed to be able to write and photograph for a living\,” Les says. “If my photographs help people better appreciate our natural world – and its fragility – then I feel I have accomplished a worthy life goal.” \n
