SUMMARY:Joshua Cripps will present “Telephoto Photography for Landscapes” via Zoom.
DESCRIPTION:For pure storytelling\, nothing beats a telephoto lens. However\, shooting with a telephoto comes with a suite of technical\, creative\, and compositional challenges. In this presentation\, Josh will teach us how to use a long lens to create stunning landscape images. He will include composition techniques\, ways to add depth and dimension\, the different lenses he uses\, and more. \nJosh is a wilderness landscape photographer living in beautiful Mammoth Lakes\, California. He feels that the power of landscape photography lies in capturing the magic of real moments experienced in nature. Josh believes that every photo should tell a story and should show the viewer exactly what was most special to the photographer in any given moment. This is how he shoots and loves to teach\, as well. His goal is to give photographers the tools they need to understand their story of a place and to translate that story into a photo that is personal\, beautiful\, and makes their viewers say WOW. \nAll of Josh’s workshops and courses can be found on his website: www.joshuacripps.com \nThis will be a paid event for non-members with a $10 donation. \nFor non-members interested in attending\, please register by making your $10 donation at https://store.berksphotographic.org/product/club-donation/. At checkout\, please specify “Josh Cripps – March 21” in the Additional information/Order Notes box. Once we receive your donation\, your pass will be emailed to you. The deadline to request passes for this event is the Wednesday before the meeting.

SUMMARY:Sean Kernan will present “Setting the Photographer Aside” via zoom
DESCRIPTION:Sean Kernan will present “Setting the Photographer Aside” to BPS via Zoom. Kernan will discuss a few foundational points\, then talk about the idea of releasing one’s ideas and working in the almost childlike presence that is the state of creativity.\nSo\, do you know Sean Kernan’s work? If you don’t\, check out his website HERE. He is extremely amazing.\nSean Kernan is a widely-exhibited photographer\, writer\, film maker and teacher\, focused on the exploration of creativity. He is the author of The Secret Books (with Jorge Luis Borges)\, Among Trees (With Anthony Doerr)\, Darrell Petit In Stone\, and Looking Into the Light\, on creativity and photography. Kernan’s photographic work has been exhibited and published in France\, Mexico\, Egypt\, Greece\, China\, Italy\, Switzerland\, Iran\, Korea\, and across the U.S. He has made the award-winning films\, Crow Stories\, The Kampala Boxing Club\, A Mind of Winter\, and The Visitor. He has also collaborated with the dance company of choreographer Alison Chase on a theater/dance/multimedia work\, Drowned\, that premiered at MASS MoCA. Clients include AT&T\, Knoll\, GE\, Pratt and Whitney\, New York Times\, Smithsonian\, Bloomberg\, Harvard. Kernan has taught and lectured at the New School/Parsons\, Art Center Pasadena\, Yale Medical School\, ICP\, and the University of Texas\, and he has written for Communication Arts\, Lenswork\, and Graphis.\nI learned of Sean Kernan when I watched John Paul Caponigro (our speaker on November 15) interview him as part of a Santa Fe Workshops series. Here is the posting of this webinar by John Paul in his newsletter “Insights”. I was quite overwhelmed by Kernan.\nThere are so many facets to Kernan. You’ll see this immediately if you spend time on his website. I don’t believe that I’ve ever spent so much time on a website before and I’ve enjoyed every visit. His portrait shots are very mesmerizing. His landscapes\, so emotional. I have watched all of his videography. “Crow Stories” just aired to the public for the first time on October 15\, 2021 and the venue was on the Crow Reservation near Yellowstone NP in Montana with Kernan present. The film is so incredibly good. His techniques of blending stories together is great as are his fade ins and outs with voices trailing over. “Crow Stories” tells intimate life stories and the many details of Crow life as seen through a special private looking glass as well as having amazing scenery. Sean has really captured something special. His short film “The Visitor” is such a touching tribute to his family’s past. We should all have such memories. The film was put together with so much feeling\, passion and creativity.\nKernan does workshops through Maine Media and Santa Fe Workshops. Here is his book site. \nSean Kernan has incredibly agreed to speak to BPS. Wait until you see the presentation of this giant among us. \nThis will be a paid event for non-members with a $10 donation.\nFor non-members interested in attending\, please register by making your $10 donation at https://store.berksphotographic.org/product/club-donation/. At checkout\, please specify “Sean Kernan – February 21” in the Additional information/Order Notes box. Once we receive your donation\, your pass will be emailed to you. The deadline to request passes for this event is the Wednesday before the meeting.

SUMMARY:"Time in Motion"- Creating Images in Camera or Cell Phone to show motion
DESCRIPTION:“Time in Motion”- Creating Images in Camera or Cell Phone to show motion\nFebruary 7th- at the Goggleworks (Pandemic and weather permitting) \nDutch Bagley will explore creating motion images in-camera. The images are a single exposure\, made in manual mode with LIVE view\, the camera settings are set to the current lighting conditions and a combination of physical movements of the camera/lens\, and body/hands is then determined. The interplay of minimalistic static elements and create a previsualized idea of what will be captured during exposure\, how the lines/curves will be composed in a final portrait/landscape format. The basic photographic view is visualizing and capturing the architecture and structure of objects in the world around me. But once the lines\, curves\, arcs and angles are seen and exposed\, Dutch looks to see how those elements may give them a sense of motion\, a sense of mystery\, a sense of possibly being imbued with energy and life. The images are highly abstractive in their composition\, and it becomes gratifying to the maker if the viewer tends to move their head in different directions to gain a better perspective or understanding of what has been presented.\nDutch’s photographic education is a self-taught one\, exploring all aspects of image making. When capturing an image\, Dutch tries to see the final result\, ‘before’ pressing the shutter. He believes that what we observe\, feel and experience\, forms the core of one’s life’s story. Part of his story is reflected in photographic images taken in an instant of time\, in his world\, that here and now. The act of processing those images allows him to express how deeply\, either with awe\, joy or sadness\, those moments in time have affected him. His images are how he tells his story. He has been photographing for his pleasure since the 1970’s with large format cameras and some film and DSLR’s. In 2014 he joined his first camera club\, which evolved into becoming a member of five clubs\, entered national competitions and made photographic presentations to local clubs. His favorite subjects are: architecture primarily in NYC\, abandoned buildings and single exposure intentional camera movement. Dutch is the Director of Curation for the Lakefront and Millstone River Galleries in NJ\nhttps://www.photographsbydutch.net \n

SUMMARY:“The Call of Creativity” with Freeman Patterson via ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:Freeman Patterson is a world renowned photographer as well as a very respected writer. He is among today’s “classic” photography figures. He has exhibited widely throughout the world over his 60 year career in photography & visual arts. He has taught innumerable workshops in many countries\, but especially in Canada\, South Africa\, and New Zealand. He has authored 15 books\, five of them on photography and visual design; his most recent\, Embracing Creation\, was published in conjunction with the opening of his large retrospective exhibition at New Brunswick’s Beaverbrook Art Gallery in September 2013. Freeman is an elected member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Art and a recipient of the Photographic Society of America’s highest award\, the Progress Medal. He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1985 and the Order of New Brunswick in 2013. Seewww.freemanpatterson.com for more information and to read the current and back issues of “Images\, Ideas\, and Reflections”\, Freeman’s periodical letter (six issues per year).\nPatterson was born in Shamper’s Bluff\, New Brunswick\, Canada. He explored several avenues\, including a Master in Divinity degree from Columbia University\, Dean of Religious Studies at Alberta College & film production. He then returned to New Brunswick in 1973 to pursue his personal artistic vision & interests. \nThe Berks Photographic Society has joined forces with the Lancaster Photo Group led by Lynn Garwood and the West Shore Photography Club led by Dennis Baker to enable this incredible opportunity to have Freeman Patterson speak to us via Zoom. This session is sponsored in part by Michael DellaCroce of Retro Photo Reading & Retro Photo York. Thank you\, Michael. \nPatterson’s session is titled “The Call of Creativity”. He begins this presentation by making a clear distinction between art and craft and provides a succinct description of the role of craft in supporting the creation of art. He follows with a talk about the nature of creativity and ways to nurture and develop the creativity with which each of us is born. He includes stories of people who have used their creativity in difficult circumstances to benefit others and follows this with a series of photographs (with commentary) that illustrate his main points and reveal how both the symbols in our dreams and the symbols in our art tell our life story. \nFreeman has presented this program many times and\, in several countries\, – Australia\, New Zealand\, South Africa\, Israel\, France\, the United Kingdom\, Canada\, and the United States – and regularly updates both the spoken and visual content. I urge everyone to not miss this session. It will be one for the books. \nPut this on your calendar and plan to join us for an amazing evening. This will be a paid event for non-members with a $10 donation.  \n  \nFor non-members interested in attending\, please register by making your $10 donation at https://store.berksphotographic.org/product/club-donation/.  At checkout\, please specify “Freeman Patterson – January 12” in the Additional information/Order Notes box.  Once we receive your donation\, your pass will be emailed to you.  The deadline to request passes for this event is the Wednesday before the meeting\, January 12\, 2022.

SUMMARY:Betsy Wilson will present "Still Life - Beyond Fruit Bowls and Flowers" via zoom
DESCRIPTION:“Still Life – Beyond Fruit Bowls and Flowers”\nBetsy Wilson will explore the world of still life photography through her unique perspective. A combination of traditional still life subjects\, nature’s fascinating still subjects\, and a few whimsical and unusual creations\, Betsy’s still lifes provide studies in composition and lighting. Unlike landscape or street photography\, the photographer is in complete control of subject matter\, composition\, shape\, color\, depth of field\, lighting and presentation. The true skill lies in the ability to take something mundane and everyday out of its normal habitat and transform it into something of beauty by using our skills as photographers.\nBetsy began learning photography after retiring from a career as a newspaper publisher. Her husband Jim gave her his hand-me-down camera and a lot of encouragement\, and she has never looked back. Her passion for photography includes a wide variety of types including macro\, landscape and nature photography. In addition to being honored as Photographer of the Year Award at the Chester County Camera Club\, she has received numerous recognitions for her artistic photography including a Silver Medal awarded at the Wilmington International Exhibition of Photography\, and First Place Award in Photography at the Philadelphia Flower Show. Betsy is an active member of the Chester County Camera Club\, and has given numerous presentations for area camera clubs. \nhttp://www.letscapturethemoment.com/photo-fun/still-life/ \n*****Important Note******: This free meeting will be held via Zoom. SUMMARY:Mitch Dobrowner will present “The Still Earth” via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Mitch is an outstanding fine art photographer. His imagery is magnificent. His landscapes are incredibly breathtaking. His storm chasing scenes are other-worldly & considered the best of this genre.\n“Growing up on Long Island (Bethpage)\, NY\, I felt lost in my late teens. Worried about my future direction in life\, my father gave me an old Argus rangefinder to fool around with. Little did he realize what an important gesture that would turn out to be for me. After doing some research and seeing the images of Minor White and Ansel Adams I quickly became addicted to photography.\nI left home at 21\, quitting my job\, leaving my friends and family to see the American Southwest for myself. In California I eventually met my wife\, and together we had 3 children\, and created our own design studio – and the tasks of running a business and raising a family took priority to photography. During that time I stopped taking pictures. Years later\, in early 2005\, inspired by my wife\, children and friends – I again picked up my cameras. I’ve been on a mission since then to create images that help evoke how I see our amazing planet.\nI owe much to the great photographers of the past\, especially Ansel Adams\, for their dedication to the craft and for inspiring me in my late teens. Though I have never met them\, their inspiration helped me determine the course my life would take.\nI live with my wife Wendy\, my son Joshua\, our dog Jet and our brat cat Jax in our homes in Los Angeles and Lone Pine\, California.”\nCheck out Mitch’s incredible work on his WEBSITE. You will not want to miss his talk after the visit. \n*****Important Note******: This free meeting will be held via Zoom. Details are in the BPS Member Center on our website.
