SUMMARY:Mitch Dobrowner will present “The Still Earth” via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Mitch is an outstanding fine art photographer. His imagery is magnificent. His landscapes are incredibly breathtaking. His storm chasing scenes are other-worldly & considered the best of this genre.\n“Growing up on Long Island (Bethpage)\, NY\, I felt lost in my late teens. Worried about my future direction in life\, my father gave me an old Argus rangefinder to fool around with. Little did he realize what an important gesture that would turn out to be for me. After doing some research and seeing the images of Minor White and Ansel Adams I quickly became addicted to photography.\nI left home at 21\, quitting my job\, leaving my friends and family to see the American Southwest for myself. In California I eventually met my wife\, and together we had 3 children\, and created our own design studio – and the tasks of running a business and raising a family took priority to photography. During that time I stopped taking pictures. Years later\, in early 2005\, inspired by my wife\, children and friends – I again picked up my cameras. I’ve been on a mission since then to create images that help evoke how I see our amazing planet.\nI owe much to the great photographers of the past\, especially Ansel Adams\, for their dedication to the craft and for inspiring me in my late teens. Though I have never met them\, their inspiration helped me determine the course my life would take.\nI live with my wife Wendy\, my son Joshua\, our dog Jet and our brat cat Jax in our homes in Los Angeles and Lone Pine\, California.”\nCheck out Mitch’s incredible work on his WEBSITE. You will not want to miss his talk after the visit. \n*****Important Note******: This free meeting will be held via Zoom. Details are in the BPS Member Center on our website. For non-members interested in attending this session as a guest\, please refer to the BPS website for information on membership (www.berksphotographic.org) &/or email BPS at guest-passes@berksphotographic.com for a guest pass to the meeting. Eligible winners of this event from Class A & B will be submitted to the International Michael Day Competition in January 2021. \n \nHenry is a national award-winning photographer and the Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Center for Photography (PCP) in Doylestown. In addition to being a working\, professional photographer\, Henry is a frequent lecturer and judge throughout the region and teaches a variety of workshops at the PCP. Henry’s work is frequently on display at galleries and shows and he has gained a following for his distinctive style of portraiture as well as his unique portrayal of manscapes\, nature\, and sports. \n  \nPhotographically\, Henry’s style is well defined but somewhat difficult to describe. He plays with movement\, light\, and color in unison to create images that are easy to identify as his. The driving theme of his work is his concept of Non-Existent Imagery: \n  \n“The images I create never existed and never will exist. They are combinations of angles\, colors\, light\, time\, lenses\, sensors\, and more\, which produce images that the human eye can’t see and the human mind can’t process in real life. Unlike the photojournalist\, I am not trying to capture a moment in time\, but rather I am hoping to create a feeling in space that conveys the essence of the subject.” \nWorking within this framework provides a great deal of artistic freedom and fosters a worldview that is both individualistic and offers unlimited creative opportunities. Many of his images are the result of hours of work and are part of his CameraGraph® series\, in which post-processing plays a major role to visually construct his “reality”. Regardless of the scene\, Henry strives to reveal the essence of his subjects in a manner that is as unique as the subjects themselves. \nYou may see his work at www.hrowanphotography.com/or contact him at henryrowan.pcp@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:“Wabi-Sabi” presented by Lisa & Tom Cuchara
DESCRIPTION:On November 16 at 7:30 PM\, Lisa & Tom Cuchara will present their new program “Wabi-Sabi” via Zoom. This program will explore the beauty of imperfect and/or unconventional subjects. This program highlights subjects that are not perfect\, such as flowers that have character\, double headed flowers\, decaying fall leaves\, the deformed coneflower that stands out as flawed and hence different and beautiful\, rust as it creates abstract patterns amidst the decay\, etc. We will also explore the concept of slowing down and appreciating the beauty of everyday life\, things that might be overlooked. Wabi-Sabi teaches one to find beauty in everyday life. It is a kind of anti-aesthetic\, an alternative to the dominating discriminatory ideas we hold about beauty.\n“Wabi” means a beauty of elegant imperfection. “Sabi” means aloneness. Together\, they suggest the beauty of ‘the withered\, weathered\, tarnished\, scarred\, intimate\, coarse\, earthly\, evanescent\, tentative\, ephemeral’ ~ Crispin Sartwell\, Six Names of Beauty. It is used to describe a particular philosophy that beauty can be found in the old\, the everyday\, the imperfect. \nLisa Cuchara\, PhD\, Master Craftsman (PPA)\, Master of Photography (M. Photog.) HonNEC is very passionate about photography and enjoys both being behind the lens and in the digital darkroom. She loves to photograph nature but finds many subjects equally intriguing. Lisa and her husband Tom are known for their expertise in Photography and in Photoshop\, and for their inspirational and informative photography workshops. Lisa has created numerous award-winning photographic images and enjoys sharing her vision\, passion and her knowledge! Her photographs have appeared in Adirondack Life\, Wild Bird\, Birder’s World\, in calendars\, on the cover of a fictional paperback novel\, in galleries and exhibitions\, and been accepted into the PPA loan collection. Lisa & Tom have published two books with Amherst Media “Create Fine Art Photographs from Historic Places and Rusty Things” and “The Frog Whisperer”. Check out Lisa and Tom and their photography classes\, photo tours and workshops at www.photographybylisaandtom.com. \nThis free meeting will be held via Zoom. Details are in the BPS member center on our website. For non-members interested in attending this session as a guest\, please refer to the BPS website for information on membership (www.berksphotographic.org) &/or email BPS at info@berksphotographic.com for a guest pass to the meeting. SUMMARY:Attitude\, Inspiration and Composition: A No BS Approach To Photography - Rich Lewis
DESCRIPTION:Rich returns to BPS after his very well received presentation on “Both Sides of Judging” in February 2020. This new talk isn’t a lesson in basic composition\, it is a serious but entertaining look at the 3 fundamental building blocks required to create great photography.\nRich has been a professional and fine art photographer since the 1970’s with a passion for landscapes\, abandoned buildings and interesting people. He uses both a professional digital camera and an iPhone to create his work. Rich’s inspiration comes from landscape painters and has developed a style he calls “Painting with a Camera.” This involves equal effort in both creating and post processing an image. Richard is an active photography blogger\, lecturer\, and instructor and conducts workshops in the New Jersey Pine Barrens and other places to help photographers find their unique creative voice. His website: RichardLewisPhotography.com\nDetails are in the BPS member center on our website. This will be a paid event for non-members with a $10 donation. SUMMARY:Club Members Meeting - on ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:An important members meeting will held on ZOOM.  We ask that members please attend on ZOOM as we will be discussing important topics about the future of the club and it’s plans for next year and beyond.  In addition\, we are soliciting interest from members who would like to assume officer and board member positions.  We have a number of potential openings for next year. \nIf interested\, contact any club officer/Board member. \nThere will be no contest this month. \nmessage from the president \nA Word from our President – Jeff Schaeffer\nI hope you are all remaining safe and well during these continued challenging times! \nAs I mentioned in the prior newsletter and at the last couple meetings\, the club really needs your help! \nDuring the September Board meeting\, we had a long discussion on the future of the club.  We are realizing that over the last 82 years since the club was established\, a lot has changed.  We feel we need to take a hard look at the club to determine what the club should look like moving forward.  Last September we had a great visioning sessions and heard a lot of ideas and dreams of what we all want to see the club become.  Great stuff!  However\, disappointingly\, when it came time for members to sign up to help in 2020\, the response was poor.  We also asked for members to volunteer to serve on the Board in 2020 and honestly I needed to beg to get enough members to fill our minimum requirements of 5 board members and 5 officers.  With the additional challenges we are all facing this year with the pandemic\, even some of the current board have needed to reduce their involvement and other board members have had to pick up additional responsibilities.  We are definitely in challenging times! \nThe board is currently identifying specific areas where help is needed.  We have some immediate needs to fill as well as responsibilities that need to transition prior to 2021.   A few of us do not plan to continue in our officer or board positions next year so the club needs to identify additional members to fill these spots. \nThe board is canceling the October competition on 10/12 so that we can use that night for an all member “Town Hall’ meeting to discuss the future of the club.  We want everyone’s input on what you want to see for our club moving forward\, what we should cut back on and what you are willing to contribute to help our club succeed in the future.  Please watch your email for additional information in the coming weeks and plan to attend the “Town Hall” meeting on October 12. \nIn the meantime\, take care\, stay safe\, stay healthy! \nJeff

SUMMARY:"How to Photograph Nature in High Key Style" - Presentation by Lisa Langell
DESCRIPTION:September 28 Presentation by Lisa Langell\nRegister now! \nLisa Langell will give an amazing BPS webinar on September 28 at 7:30 PM titled “How to Photograph Nature in High Key Style”. We are very fortunate to have Lisa speak to BPS through a special program sponsored by the Photographic Society of America. Thank you to Larry Stamm for forwarding this opportunity. \nHigh key photography is a powerful\, evocative and often ethereal type of photography. It involves creating images where there is a dominance of white or bright tones. It is a type of photography that goes against most “traditional” styles and “rules” of nature photography. It requires the right circumstances – the right light\, subject\, and setting – in order for the magic of High Key photography to work. This class will introduce participants to the genre of High Key photography\, which can be one of the most artistic forms of nature photography that can be done in-camera and/or a combination of in-camera and post processing. You will learn: what lighting conditions are best (and worst) for high-key photography; the settings that are generally recommended for creating high-key work; what foregrounds and backgrounds work best for high key photography; composition tips for this style of photography; post processing tips to create the final look. \nThis webinar is designed to be fun\, educational and interactive. You will be able to chat with Lisa throughout the webinar! This isn’t your boring\, old “sit and get” webinar — this is engaging\, fun and designed to meet YOUR needs! \nWhether it was previously working as a master floral designer\, a licensed psychologist\, university faculty\, an international consultant in K-12 education\, the Chief Business Development Officer of an education technology company\, a researcher\, a writer\, or an artist – Lisa enjoyed meeting each challenge. In 2015\, she successfully transitioned to photography full-time and left the corporate and consulting world behind. Lisa is an award-winning professional photographer whose work has appeared in numerous prestigious publications\, including the cover of Outdoor Photographer magazine for its first digital edition in June 2020 on this exact topic\, plus numerous images in Arizona Highways\, Ranger Rick\, art galleries and more. She currently sits on the Board of Directors for the North American Nature Photography Association. She is also a proud ambassador for Tamron\, FotoPro\, and  H&Y filters. \nLisa Langell may be found at these sites:\nhttp://www.langellphotography.com and https://www.youtube.com/langellphotograph. You can also follow her on Instagram. \nTo participate in this special BPS webinar session via Zoom\, BPS members will need to use this link to register. There will not be a BPS Zoom link for this unique meeting & you must register in advance. Registration is free for BPS members & only takes a minute. Do it today before you forget and get left out. You will receive a confirmation email with the session details. The session will also be recorded & made available to all BPS registrants even if you cannot attend the webinar. During the registration\, you can uncheck the Eventbrite box if you want to avoid their future emails. Upon registration\, you will be put on an email list from Lisa for her blogs but you can easily Unsubscribe later\, if desired. However\, I’ve seen them & they are good educational pieces so I’d recommend giving her blog a try. Ignore the Mountain time zone on the ticket. The webinar door will open at 7:20 for registrants to ask any photography related questions to a camera store representative prior to the start of the meeting. \nNon-members desiring to attend this session should be referred to the BPS website for information on membership (https://berksphotographic.org/) &/or contact BPS at info@berksphotographic.com for registration information.
