SUMMARY:Valerie Hoffman teaches how to photograph "Holiday Lights"
DESCRIPTION:Valerie Hoffman will teach us how to photograph “Holiday Lights.”  It’s the most wonderful time of the year! The holiday season\, when colorful lights and decorations can be found all around\, is a great time to challenge your photography skills and get out and shoot! For those who have never tried much beyond playing with their cellphone’s camera\, this can be a daunting task. You’re photographing in the dark\, the camera’s meter doesn’t want to give you a good exposure\, it’s hard to see to focus\, what you thought was in focus still turned out blurry… So many challenges to deal with. In this presentation we’ll talk about them all! \nJoin us as we view images and discuss exposure\, focus\, composition\, other camera settings\, gear and even some creative techniques. Then consider getting out and joining us as a group to put what you learned in practice. Valerie has it all planned. On Thursday\, December 7\, she will continue teaching with a hands on excursion to Koziar’s Christmas Village. See below for details. \nVal is committed to helping photographers become better at their craft\, and have fun in the process. Visit her website for her upcoming treks and other offerings at valeriehoffmanphotography.com. \n– December 7\, 2023 (Thursday)  starting at 6 PM – Follow up instructional excursion to Koziar’s Christmas Village. Join us on Thursday\, December 7th\, for an “almost free” fun photowalk at Koziar’s Christmas Village in Bernville with Val there to offer help\, instruction\, and suggestions. Cost for the event is only $15\, and needs to be paid directly to Val by Dec 6th. You can bring your money to the club meeting and holiday lights presentation on Monday December 4th. For those who will not be at the GoggleWorks that evening\, you can send the money to Val using PayPal\, Venmo\, or the Cash app. You will still need to also pay your entrance fee to the Christmas Village which is $13 for adults or $12 for seniors. \nWe will meet at a designated spot prior to the village’s opening for the night\, which is 6 PM. Here is a link to Koziar’s which covers all the info about the place if you have never been: koziarschristmasvillage.com \nDue to the possibility of crowds and smallish walkways\, and so Val can give the best instruction\, we are limiting this group to only 10 people. The first 10 to contact Val and sign up are in! You can email her with questions and to get specific payment info at vahoffman22@gmail.com\nShe will send an email to those who register\, with suggested gear and any other pertinent info.

SUMMARY:Adobe Lightroom processing workshop
DESCRIPTION:Hi Folks\,\nWe had a very well received evening of image processing on February 6 led by Leigh Reeves as part of the member speaker series organized by Jay Linsenbigler. Five of us worked on Leigh’s image in real time then compared our final products to his vision. It was an excellent learning experience for all of us. Several members suggested having a follow up processing session so let’s go!! \nI will lead an Adobe Lightroom processing workshop on Saturday\, March 4 from 9-11 AM in the BPS suite 326 at the GoggleWorks\, in-person only & not on Zoom. This will be a free session\, limited to dues-current BPS members only. An RSVP to this email that you plan to join us would be greatly appreciated. If there is questionable weather that day look for a status update email. \nThis will be an interactive session. Attendees are encouraged to bring laptops with Lightroom installed to follow along with the processing steps but that is definitely not required for the workshop. Internet service will be available to run Lightroom\, as needed. I will address some basic Lightroom steps then process a few of my own images as examples of how I use Lightroom. I would ask that those attending either email me one or two unprocessed images &/or bring an SD card with the images loaded to The GoggleWorks so that I can process them with the group. This is not mandatory but will add to the fun. Ideally\, these images would be RAW files so that the full potential of the files & Lightroom can be achieved but JPG files would still work. If the image file size is greater than 20MB & you are going to email the file then use WeTransfer or Dropbox to do so as that size will be too large for an email attachment. I will try to get through everyone’s images but that will be limited by the time factor. I apologize in advance if your image is not processed. \nAs in the case for all BPS in-person sessions\, BPS highly recommends that all participants be up to date with Covid vaccinations per the definition of the CDC. Please avoid joining us if there has been a known exposure to Covid within the past 10 days. If there is any question of symptoms then do a Covid test before coming to the session. Masks are optional & welcomed. \nEmail me if you have any questions. Hope to see many of you\,\nvince.pellegrini@berksphotographic.com \nVince Pellegrini

SUMMARY:Sheep and Wool day at Springton Manor Farm &  Iron Pour & Forge Fest.
DESCRIPTION:Next up in our ongoing club outings will be on April 30th. We’re planning on a doubleheader event so there should be something for everyone. First in the morning we’ll be meeting for the Sheep and Wool day at Springton Manor Farm in Glenmoore\, PA. There will be plenty of photo ops of farm animals\, farm demonstrations\, and sheep shearing during the day. The new baby animals are in the barns for the kids to pet\, and as always the Springton goats will be posing for portraits. Admission is free and there is free remote parking with a short bus ride to the farm.  We plan to meet at 11:30 in front of the Manor House which is on your right as you enter the park.  You can get more information about the event schedule and directions to the farm at their website https://www.chesco.org/2307/Sheep-Wool . \nLater in the day we’ll be close to “home base” at the GoggleWorks for the annual Iron Pour & Forge Fest. The Forge Fest is from 2 to 7pm followed by the Iron Pour from 7 to 10pm.  Blacksmith demonstrations\, food and music will keep everyone busy during the day. We’ll plan to meet later in the day at 5:30 to prepare for the Iron Pour at 7:00 where there will be plenty of heat and sparks flying for us to photograph. More info on the festival can be found on the Google Works web site at this address.  https://goggleworks.org/event/spring-iron-pour-forge-fest/  \nSo if you like the soft and fuzzy stuff join us in the morning at Springton Manor then finish it off with the hard pounding anvil action of the Iron Pour. \nHope to see lots of new faces at our next outing.

SUMMARY:“The Call of Creativity” with Freeman Patterson via ZOOM
DESCRIPTION:Freeman Patterson is a world renowned photographer as well as a very respected writer. He is among today’s “classic” photography figures. He has exhibited widely throughout the world over his 60 year career in photography & visual arts. He has taught innumerable workshops in many countries\, but especially in Canada\, South Africa\, and New Zealand. He has authored 15 books\, five of them on photography and visual design; his most recent\, Embracing Creation\, was published in conjunction with the opening of his large retrospective exhibition at New Brunswick’s Beaverbrook Art Gallery in September 2013. Freeman is an elected member of the Royal Canadian Academy of Art and a recipient of the Photographic Society of America’s highest award\, the Progress Medal. He was appointed to the Order of Canada in 1985 and the Order of New Brunswick in 2013. Seewww.freemanpatterson.com for more information and to read the current and back issues of “Images\, Ideas\, and Reflections”\, Freeman’s periodical letter (six issues per year).\nPatterson was born in Shamper’s Bluff\, New Brunswick\, Canada. He explored several avenues\, including a Master in Divinity degree from Columbia University\, Dean of Religious Studies at Alberta College & film production. He then returned to New Brunswick in 1973 to pursue his personal artistic vision & interests. \nThe Berks Photographic Society has joined forces with the Lancaster Photo Group led by Lynn Garwood and the West Shore Photography Club led by Dennis Baker to enable this incredible opportunity to have Freeman Patterson speak to us via Zoom. This session is sponsored in part by Michael DellaCroce of Retro Photo Reading & Retro Photo York. Thank you\, Michael. \nPatterson’s session is titled “The Call of Creativity”. He begins this presentation by making a clear distinction between art and craft and provides a succinct description of the role of craft in supporting the creation of art. He follows with a talk about the nature of creativity and ways to nurture and develop the creativity with which each of us is born. He includes stories of people who have used their creativity in difficult circumstances to benefit others and follows this with a series of photographs (with commentary) that illustrate his main points and reveal how both the symbols in our dreams and the symbols in our art tell our life story. \nFreeman has presented this program many times and\, in several countries\, – Australia\, New Zealand\, South Africa\, Israel\, France\, the United Kingdom\, Canada\, and the United States – and regularly updates both the spoken and visual content. I urge everyone to not miss this session. It will be one for the books. \nPut this on your calendar and plan to join us for an amazing evening. This will be a paid event for non-members with a $10 donation.  \n  \nFor non-members interested in attending\, please register by making your $10 donation at https://store.berksphotographic.org/product/club-donation/.  At checkout\, please specify “Freeman Patterson – January 12” in the Additional information/Order Notes box.  Once we receive your donation\, your pass will be emailed to you.  The deadline to request passes for this event is the Wednesday before the meeting\, January 12\, 2022.

SUMMARY:Mitch Dobrowner will present “The Still Earth” via Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Mitch is an outstanding fine art photographer. His imagery is magnificent. His landscapes are incredibly breathtaking. His storm chasing scenes are other-worldly & considered the best of this genre.\n“Growing up on Long Island (Bethpage)\, NY\, I felt lost in my late teens. Worried about my future direction in life\, my father gave me an old Argus rangefinder to fool around with. Little did he realize what an important gesture that would turn out to be for me. After doing some research and seeing the images of Minor White and Ansel Adams I quickly became addicted to photography.\nI left home at 21\, quitting my job\, leaving my friends and family to see the American Southwest for myself. In California I eventually met my wife\, and together we had 3 children\, and created our own design studio – and the tasks of running a business and raising a family took priority to photography. During that time I stopped taking pictures. Years later\, in early 2005\, inspired by my wife\, children and friends – I again picked up my cameras. I’ve been on a mission since then to create images that help evoke how I see our amazing planet.\nI owe much to the great photographers of the past\, especially Ansel Adams\, for their dedication to the craft and for inspiring me in my late teens. Though I have never met them\, their inspiration helped me determine the course my life would take.\nI live with my wife Wendy\, my son Joshua\, our dog Jet and our brat cat Jax in our homes in Los Angeles and Lone Pine\, California.”\nCheck out Mitch’s incredible work on his WEBSITE. You will not want to miss his talk after the visit. \n*****Important Note******: This free meeting will be held via Zoom. Details are in the BPS Member Center on our website. SUMMARY:What Photography Judges Look For - Richard Lewis
DESCRIPTION:This is a fun\, yet very frank look at that hardest job any photographer can do… Judging! We’ll examine both the objective and subjective things that make a photograph great and exhibition worthy. Plus\, YOU GET TO BE THE JUDGE! This is a presentation with audience participation and you get to judge some of my work and the work of the photography masters. You’ll discover that no photograph is perfect. \n \n  \nRichard Lewis\, Photographer \nRichard Lewis has been a professional and fine art photographer since the 1970’s with a passion for landscapes\, abandoned buildings and interesting people. He uses both a professional digital camera and an iPhone to create his work. \nRichard’s inspiration comes from landscape painters and has developed a style he calls “Painting with a Camera”. This involves equal effort in both creating and post processing an image. \nRichard is an active photography blogger\, lecturer\, instructor and conducts workshops in the New Jersey Pine Barrens to help photographers find their unique creative voice \nWebsite: RichardLewisPhotography.com
